Overview:

Tarangire is one of Tanzania’s lesser known but incredibly rewarding safari destinations. Located in the Manyara Region of northern Tanzania, Tarangire National Park is renowned for its dense wildlife population, dramatic landscapes, and massive baobab trees. It’s often included in the northern safari circuit, alongside Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Lake Manyara.

Key Features of Tarangire:

     Wildlife

  • Elephants: Tarangire is famous for having one of the largest elephant populations in Tanzania. Herds of up to 300 elephants can be seen.
  • Migratory animals: During the dry season (June–October), animals migrate to Tarangire in search of water, making it a top wildlife-viewing spot. • Other wildlife includes:
  • Lions, leopards, cheetahs
  • Giraffes, wildebeest, zebras, buffalo
  • Over 550 bird species – a birdwatcher’s paradise

     Landscape & Vegetation

  • Rolling hills, acacia woodlands, swamps, and iconic giant baobab trees.
  • The Tarangire River runs through the park and becomes a vital water source in the dry season.

Cultural Experience

  • Home to the Maasai and Barabaig tribes.

Nearby villages offer opportunities to learn about local traditions, dances and crafts.

Accessibility

  • Approximately 2 hours’ drive (120 km) from Arusha.
  • Often visited en route to Serengeti or Ngorongoro.
  • Has airstrips for fly-in safaris.

Best Time to Visit

  • Dry Season (June–October): Best for wildlife viewing; animals gather at the river.
  • Green Season (November–May): Fewer tourists, lush landscapes, and excellent bird watching.

Why Choose Tarangire?

  • Less crowded than Serengeti or Ngorongoro.
  • Excellent for elephant viewing and photography.
  • Ideal for those seeking a more peaceful, authentic safari experience. • Great for short safaris or weekend trips from Arusha.
